ANA COULD HARDLY believe it when the program leader came up to her at the hostel she and the rest of the group were staying in.

“It’s a letter for you!” the man said, handing it over as he passed out the rest of the mail.

“Miraculous,” she couldn’t help thinking, staring at the handwritten address across the front of the envelope.

Adrian Lowe, for Ana May. She hadn’t even had to do more than write to him first, telling him where they were staying, and where he could send letters, if he still wanted to. The only thing she warned him was, she didn’t know if they’d be staying in one place for very long.

“That’s fine with me,” he’d sworn at the time.

She hoped that was true. It made her feel bad that, even as she was reading his letter, she couldn’t stop thinking about that promise. All her bags were packed, sitting at the end of her bed. If she looked down the row, she would find the others had all done the same. Rucksacks were ready for stacking, ready for the next bus that would take them further into the city, college kids all ready to take on California, and save some souls.

He never did say if we would be back here, she found herself thinking as the program leader handed them out addresses for where they’d be going next.

Tucking hers away, she turned back to Adrian’s letter, trying to lose herself in his messy handwriting, instead of her nervous thoughts about when she might hear from him next.
